The “Ellenistico” Ring

The “Ellenistico” Ring and the “Intaglio” Ring are L’Arte Nascosta’s signature signet rings.

Developed in collaboration with Maestro Paolo Penko, each ring is an heirloom piece designed to evoke the centuries-old aesthetic of Florentine art and architecture.

Each signet ring is designed exclusively for the patron that commissions it, and is masterfully crafted to forever express the personal meaning that he or she would like to convey.

Whether representative of love, family, or a personal life philosophy, each ring is a lasting connection to something greater and more profound than the object itself.

How it’s made

Step 1.

Design

Determining the motif that will ultimately be engraved on your ring is the first step of every commission. We are always pleased to engrave pre-existing subjects on our patrons’ rings; however, our true expertise lies in designing bespoke motifs.

Upon request, we consult with the patron to understand the personal meaning that he or she would like to express, and devise a custom motif by extrapolating symbolic details from Renaissance and Medieval art, and other historic references.

The resulting motif is a uniquely personal device firmly rooted in centuries of historical provenance with distinctly Italian style.

Step 11.

Pre production

Once the patron approves the engraving motif, and confirms his or her finger size, a finalized order is sent to Maestro Penko in Florence.  Paolo and his team begin production by casting the ring in .925 Sterling Silver, 9k or 18k Gold. He then sizes the ring and applies our signature cesoro finish.

Cesoro is our preferred finishing technique inspired by the hammered finish that was often applied to jewelry during the Etruscan age.

Engraving

Step 111.

Once the cesoro finish has been evenly applied to the ring’s surface, the Maestro proceeds to engrave the ring by using a series of specialized tools including a bulino or burin.

Finishing and Delivery

Step 1v.

When the engraving has been completed, the ring is burnished by submerging it in a sulfuric solution that turns its entire surface black. Maestro Penko then buffs the high points of the ring, leaving the engraved areas blackened, or brunito.*

At this point, the ring is ready to be delivered to the patron along with a certificate of authenticity (handwritten by Paolo Penko) and the Maestro’s hand-drawn sketch study of the engraving.

*The production phase, called brunitura is not applicable to commissions in gold.
