The “Numismatico” Pendant

Ancient coins are miniature monuments to antiquity that offer a tangible connection to distant worlds otherwise separated by miles and millennia.

The coins of the ancient world were forms of currency just as much as they were rhetorical devices minted to dispatch messages and developments in current events across expansive territories at a time when distance presented a significant hindrance to effective communication.

The accession of new rulers, military conquests, tributes to deity and the ruling class: these are but a few of the themes that were regularly commemorated on ancient coins, which circulated throughout empires for decades before lying fallow for centuries as the unremitting clock of time ticked on.

Inspired by the Renaissance custom of breathing new life into ancient artifacts by setting them within contemporary works of art and architecture, we designed our “Numismatico” Pendant in collaboration with Paolo Penko in order to exalt the beauty of these relics of the classical world by setting them into precious, hand-crafted pendants, thereby safeguarding them for yet another generation.

How it’s made

Coin Research

Step 1.

We work with our network of specialized antique dealers to source collectable coins from Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and the Byzantine Empire, and conduct thorough research to uncover the history of each of the coins we source.

Pre Production

Step 11.

The shape of the coin’s silhouette is traced on a Sterling Silver or 18k Gold plate from which the general structure of the pendant frame is cut. The pendant frame is then tempered and hammered, which results in Paolo Penko’s characteristic textured finish. 18k Gold tabs, filed and engraved to the shape of stylized laurel leaves, are then soldered to the pendant frame.

Upon request, settings may be further embellished with precious stones and/or decorative engravings.

Since the ancient methods of minting coins yielded results that vary in shape and size, we produce a bespoke setting for each “Numismatico” Pendant commission.

Assembly & Finished Product

Step 111.

Once production of the pendant frame has been completed, the coin is set by compressing the laurel-shaped tabs. To safeguard the integrity of the coin, no adhesives are used to secure the setting.

At this point, the pendant is ready for delivery along with a certificate of authenticity, handwritten by Paolo Penko, and a complete report of our research findings about the history of your coin.
