Florentine Luxury:
Patronage and Consumption in Medieval & Renaissance Florence
For history lovers
Abstract
Through the Florentine Luxury tour, you will witness the Middle Ages and Renaissance come to life before your eyes as one of our expert guides leads you on a journey through museums and artisan workshops in the city center to demonstrate how - contrary to what most might think - Renaissance luxury still has a place in our world.
There was a time when patronage was the only method available for consuming luxury goods. Those who could afford it did not consume as we do today, rather they commissioned enduring works of formal and decorative arts, and everyday material goods. Whether maiolica ceramics, jewelry, paintings or even altarpieces, the Patrons of the Arts of the past contributed directly to the ideation of the goods and artists and artisans curated. With an eye toward the future, and lightyears away from today’s consumable culture, the patrons of the past sought to give life to beautiful works that would outlive them, transcending the constraints of time in order to convey the values and principles that they held to be ever true.
This excursion begins with a with a private tour of Palazzo Davanzati - a lesser known, but remarkable house museum that beautifully illustrates how Florence’s elite lived in and decorated their homes during Middle Ages and Renaissance. The experience will continue with a private tour of the workshops of two of Florence’s most prestigious artisans: Master Goldsmith Paolo Penko and Scarpelli Mosaici, where you will witness how traditional techniques employed to produce luxury goods during the Renaissance have changed very little in more than 5 centuries.
